Wandering Poets are another classic. They have a tendency to show up, give a whole lot of exposition and then leave again. Sometimes they reveal mysterious poems and songs. Sometimes they give other kinds of information. Sometimes they're wonderful, sometimes treacherous, but always kind of grating. Tom Bombadil may be considered a wandering poet, albeit possibly not a very useful one.
